Overwhelmed
I keep having to tell myself it’s okay to feel overwhelmed. My brain still thinks I should be able to handle everything without falling apart. It still thinks needing help is failure. That belief is hurting me more than anything else.
The truth is that I am carrying too much right now, and I don’t know how to say that out loud without feeling like I’m admitting defeat.
I’m still recovering. I’m still struggling to walk more than a few minutes at a time. Every step feels like a negotiation between pain and necessity. I hate that my body can’t keep up with my life. I hate that healing feels like a punishment instead of progress.
And now Joe is hurt. So I’m doing the things he can’t do. I don’t resent him. But it’s another weight on top of everything else I’m already barely holding. It’s one more thing I have to be strong for when I don’t feel strong at all.
Work feels suffocating. It feels like a room with no air. I open my laptop and immediately feel my chest tighten. Every task feels urgent. Every message feels like someone asking for a piece of me I don’t have to give. I keep trying to push through, but my emotions are everywhere. I cry easily. I snap easily. I shut down easily. I don’t recognize myself right now.
And I’m not sleeping. I already have chronic insomnia, but right now it feels like my brain is actively fighting rest. I lie there exhausted but awake, staring at the ceiling, knowing I need sleep to function, knowing everything feels heavier when I’m running on nothing. My thoughts spiral. My worries get louder. My body begs for rest my mind refuses to give.
The hardest part is that I feel like I can’t talk to anyone about any of this. Not because people don’t care, but because I don’t know how to explain the mix of fear and frustration and exhaustion without sounding dramatic or needy. I don’t know how to say “I’m not okay” when I’m still technically doing everything I’m supposed to do. I don’t know how to ask for help when I’ve spent years convincing myself I shouldn’t need it.
So I keep telling myself it’s okay to feel overwhelmed. It’s okay to not be strong every second. It’s okay to admit that this is too much. It’s okay to be human.
I’m trying to believe that. I’m trying to let that be enough for today.
