The Trip

There are trips you take because you need a break, and then there are trips you take because you’re quietly hoping something in your life will shift. A trip last year was the second kind. I didn’t say that out loud. I hid it behind work and acted like it was just another week away.

It wasn’t.

I built this small, private hope around the idea of connection…hanging out with a friend. Nothing dramatic. Just a simple wish that someone I cared about would show up.

When it didn’t happen, the bottom dropped out. It was the kind of hurt that hits fast and quiet. The kind that makes your stomach twist and your face go hot. The kind that makes you feel stupid for believing in something you never said out loud.

I went through all of it alone. The waiting. The confusion. The embarrassment. The shame. The silence. Pain without a witness doesn’t stay pain. It turns into something heavier. Something that sticks.

I deleted my entire online presence afterward. Not out of anger. Not for attention. I deleted everything because I felt exposed in a way I couldn’t explain. It was a freeze response. The instinct to hide when you feel too vulnerable, too hopeful, too human.

That trip rearranged me. It taught me how dangerous it feels to hope alone. It taught me how heavy silence can be. It taught me how much it hurts to carry a story no one else knows happened.

I plan differently now. I protect myself differently. I don’t leave my emotional stability in someone else’s hands. And I don’t carry pain alone anymore.

The truth is, that trip didn’t destroy me. It revealed me. It showed me the parts of myself I had been pretending weren’t there. The hopeful parts. The tender parts. The parts that want connection more than control….and really, how deeply I crave connection.

It showed me how deeply I feel things, even when I try not to. And it taught me that silence is where pain grows teeth. Honesty, even whispered, even late, even shaky, is where it finally loosens its grip.
